The minimal, Scandinavian style that I (and I’m assuming you too, since you are reading this blog) love so much is all about, well, minimalism. And that means getting rid of everything you don’t need.
Well, maybe not getting rid of everything permanently (personally, I hate throwing stuff away). But there are ways to minimise the clutter and that could mean getting rid of some items and storing others out of sight.
As usual, I have scoured Pinterest for some photos and ideas to give you some tips on how to create a space that is free of clutter.
Tip #1: Get rid of the unnecessary
I know – this is the difficult part. But once in a while, it’s a good idea to take some time to go through your home and just throw away what you don’t need. In my case, that would be old perfume bottles and pretty packaging items (boxes and shopping bags) that I thought would be ‘useful’ later. It’s not. You have to throw it away!
Take some inspiration from these spaces – you see only the necessities. And what more do you need?
Tip #2: Design your space with functionality in mind
One of the key elements to Scandinavian design is functionality. Each item must serve a purpose and the more versatile that item is, the better. I just love how the following spaces are designed with functionality in mind:
The bed above was cleverly designed to incorporate a set of cupboards, drawers and extra space on top.
That small space below a staircase is almost always left empty. Here, the stairs are made from wood and every second step is extended to create some extra storage space. Very creative.
Tip #3: Be creative with storage
While it is not possible to throw absolutely everything away, with some clever storage ideas, you can get away with ‘hiding’ the items that clutter up your space. Here are some ideas to try:
